Introduction

Understanding Smoke Damage

Smoke damage leaves behind stubborn stains and unpleasant odours that can bleed through standard paints. Whether it’s from a house fire, a commercial kitchen mishap, or a long‑term smoker in the property, these stains can be tough to hide when overcoating often leading to patches showing through.

Why Conventional Paints Fail

Standard paints often fail to block the stubborn residue and odour left by smoke, allowing stains to bleed through and odours to linger even after multiple coats.

SPO Shellac Stain & Odour Blocker: The Go-To Solution

SPO Shellac Stain & Odour Blocker is formulated to tackle even the most persistent smoke discolouration. The shellac base (resin from the Lac Bug) seals off any residual odours while preventing the dark or yellowish stains from ghosting through subsequent coats of paint.

Preparation

  • Clean the surface with a mild detergent to remove soot and debris, such as Fluxaf Power Clean
  • Ensure the area is fully dry and free of loose paint
  • Lightly sand glossy areas to improve adhesion

Application

  • Stir (do not shake) SPO Shellac Stain & Odour Blocker thoroughly
  • Apply a thin, even coat with a brush or short pile roller
  • This paint dries extremely quickly, so be sure to work fast. Avoid leaving the tin or brushes exposed for extended periods to prevent them from drying out
  • Allow around 30 minutes to dry in a well‑ventilated space
  • Methylated spirits will be needed to clean any tools used.

Recoat & Finish

  • If any smoke stains persist, apply a second coat
  • Once fully dry, topcoat with your chosen paint
