Introduction

Understanding Damp Walls (Penetrating/Rising)

Penetrating damp occurs when moisture seeps through external walls (e.g., cracks or porous brickwork), whereas rising damp travels upward from the ground through masonry. Both can leave unsightly stains, peeling paint, and a musty odour if not addressed quickly.

Why Conventional Paints Fail

Standard paints trap moisture behind their film, causing bubbles, flaking, and mould. When applied to damp walls, they simply can’t adhere properly or allow the moisture to dissipate.

SPO Anti‑Damp Paint: The Go‑To Solution

Formulated to “breathe” while still blocking further moisture intrusion, SPO Anti‑Damp Paint's oil-based formula includes a hydrophilic additive that reacts with incoming moisture, helping the paint bond more securely to the damp substrate. The paint’s microstructure allows moisture to dissipate gradually preventing pressure building. It also contains a built-in biocide to inhibit mould growth.

How to Paint Damp Walls (Penetrating/Rising)

Surface Prep

  • Identify & Fix Sources: Resolve structural issues like cracks or damaged brickwork and the route cause of damp.
  • Clean & Remove Flaking: Scrape off loose paint and dust, ensuring a stable surface.
  • Check for Saturation: Surfaces should be damp but not dripping wet.
  • Optional Mould Treatment: If mould is visible, apply a fungicidal cleaner and rinse thoroughly like Fluxaf Mould Remover.
  • Filler (optional): If needed, fill any damaged or uneven areas with a suitable wall filler to ensure a smooth finish.

Application

  • Stir Well: Mix SPO Anti‑Damp Paint thoroughly before use.
  • Apply Evenly: Use brush, roller, or spray in a thin, uniform coat—avoid heavy buildup.
  • Ventilation & Drying: The paint typically dries to the touch within a few hours, but allow ~12 hours before adding a breathable topcoat.
  • Tool Cleanup: White spirit is recommended for cleaning brushes/rollers.
