How to Stop Condensation and Dripping Water on Metal Roofs & Roofing Sheets with SPO Anti‑Condensation Paint

How to Stop Condensation and Dripping Water on Metal Roofs & Roofing Sheets with SPO Anti‑Condensation Paint

Quick Highlights

  • Prevents Dripping Condensation: No more water ruining inventory or work areas
  • Insulating Coating: Slightly textured, raising the surface temperature to stop moisture buildup
  • All Metals Primer Required: For a durable, rust‑free base layer
  • Rust Converter: Use Temac Rust Converter to tackle pitting or residual rust
  • Overcoat in ~4 Hours: Water‑based, quick‑dry formula for minimal downtime

Introduction

Condensation Problems on Metal Roofs & Sheets

Metal roofs and panels are common in warehouses, storage units, garages, shipping containers, workshops, and sheds. However, temperature fluctuations and high humidity can lead to condensation collecting on the underside of the metal. This results in:

  • Dripping water onto equipment, stock, or floors
  • Damp smells, mould, or mildew
  • Corrosion and peeling paint over time

Why Do You Need SPO Anti‑Condensation Paint?

When moisture hits a cold metal surface, it condenses. Standard paints do nothing to address the root issue—temperature differential—so condensation returns quickly. SPO Anti‑Condensation Paint provides an insulating layer that increases the surface temperature, preventing water droplets from forming.

How It Works (Simplified)

  • Slightly textured, water‑based coating insulates the surface, raising the metal’s temperature.
  • This eliminates condensation by stopping moisture from cooling and turning to water.
  • Built‑in biocidal protection minimises mould in high‑humidity areas.
  • Dries in about 4 hours, allowing for quicker turnaround times.

How to Stop Condensation on Metal Roofs & Roofing Sheets

Step 1: Surface Preparation

  1. Clean & Degrease: Thoroughly remove dirt, oil, or debris. For very old, dirty steel, a professional blast‑clean to SA 2½ is ideal. If not possible, use mechanical abrasion or a wire brush.
  2. Remove Rust & Loose Flaking Material: Any rust scales or peeling paint must be scraped or sanded away.
  3. Apply Temac Rust Converter (If Rust Present):
    • Use on any remaining rust pitting. Let it react fully.
    • Excess or unreacted rust converter can be wiped off using water or methylated spirits.
    • Wait 24 hours minimum for it to dry.

Step 2: Priming with SPO All Metals Primer

  • Prime ASAP after Step1: Once the surface is clean and free of loose rust, apply SPO All Metals Primer promptly.
  • Thin, Even Coat: Ensure full coverage, avoiding heavy pooling.
  • Prevent Future Rust: This step is crucial to stop new corrosion beneath the anti‑condensation coating.

Step 3: Apply SPO Anti‑Condensation Paint

  1. Stir Thoroughly: Mix the paint to achieve a uniform consistency.
  2. First Coat: Use a brush or short pile roller. Aim for a thin, consistent layer—slightly textured is normal.
  3. Dry Time (~4 Hours): The water‑based paint dries relatively quickly; ensure adequate ventilation if indoors.
  4. Second Coat: Once the first coat is dry, add the second coat for optimal insulation.
  5. Optional Overcoat: The white, slightly textured finish can be left as is or topcoated for colour.

Where to Use It

  • Warehouses & Storage Units: Protect goods from drips and dampness.
  • Garages & Workshops: Keep machinery and vehicles dry.
  • Shipping Containers: Preserve stored items or workshop setups inside containers.
  • Sheds: Ideal for garden equipment or workshop spaces prone to condensation.
